Growing a Lawn on Greensboro Clay Soil

Our red clay packs hard, holds water and drains slowly. Testing, lime and core aeration with compost are what keep grass growing on it, and we do the aerating and top dressing.

Heavy Red Clay Under the Lawn

Piedmont red clay holds water, drains slowly and packs down hard wherever feet, mowers and cars cross it.

Clay is made of very fine particles that sit tight together. Press the air out from between them and roots have nowhere to go, so the grass stays shallow and rain sits on top instead of soaking in. That is why compacted ground is aerated before sod goes down: it improves rooting and lets water get in.

Here is how each of those shows up in a yard:

Holds water
Wet clay stays wet, and a low spot in the lawn can stay soggy long after the rain stops.
Drains slowly
Water runs off the top. Where it crosses the walk or washes out a bed, the yard needs drainage or grading work before any maintenance will look right.
Packs down
Foot traffic and mowing press it hard, the roots stay near the surface and the turf thins out.

What a Soil Test Shows

A soil test reads the soil's pH and nutrient levels and tells you whether the lawn needs lime or other amendments.

On clay it is the first thing to know, because lime and fertilizer put down without one are a guess. A new lawn starts the same way: sod preparation begins with a soil test to see what the ground needs. For how the test itself is done, see NC Department of Agriculture, Agronomic Services Soil Testing.

The report answers these questions for your lawn:

  • pHHow acid the soil is, and whether it suits the grass growing in it.
  • Nutrient levelsWhat the soil already holds for the grass to feed on.
  • Lime and amendmentsWhether the lawn needs either one before it is seeded or fed.

When Lime Corrects Soil pH

Lime goes down when a soil test shows the pH is too low for the grass, and above all for new seedlings.

"Liming" is the trade's word for it, and it most often happens ahead of seeding, so the ground is ready the day the seed goes down.

The test decides it. If the pH is already where the grass wants it, there is no reason to spread lime on the lawn.

Loosening Compacted Clay With Lawn Aeration

Core aeration pulls plugs out of the clay to relieve compaction, and compost top dressing in the holes improves the soil a little more each time.

A loosening visit goes in this order:

  1. Pull the plugs"Core aeration", what most people call plugging or aerating, pulls cores of soil out of the lawn, which exposes the roots and relieves compaction.
  2. Seed the thin spotsWhere the grass has thinned, "overseeding" puts new seed into the open holes right after aeration.
  3. Fill the holes with compost"Top dressing" spreads organic compost over the turf and into the holes, where it feeds the roots and holds water and nutrients.
  4. Build the soil over timeThe compost stays down in the clay, so each round leaves the ground looser and better at holding what the grass needs.

Grass That Copes With Clay

Tall fescue and Bermuda can both grow on clay once it has been loosened and amended, as long as the grass matches the sun your lawn gets.

The grass type sets the whole care calendar, so we identify it first. Sun, how the lawn gets used and how much upkeep you want decide which one belongs in your yard. NC State Extension, Carolina Lawns covers the grass types that suit a North Carolina home lawn.

  • "Cool-season grasses"

    Tall fescue

The everyday lawn grass here. It grows mostly in spring and fall, is seeded and fed in early fall, and takes the part shade of a yard with mature trees better than Bermuda does.

  • "Warm-season grasses"

    Bermuda

The choice for a lawn in full sun. It is seeded and fed from late spring into summer, and it goes "dormant", brown in winter, until it greens up late in spring.

Will Grass Grow on Clay Soil?

Grass can grow well on clay that has been aerated, limed to the right pH and fed on what a soil test shows. Skip those and the same clay packs down, holds water at the surface and leaves the roots short of air.

Enjoyed my experience with the the Cut&Grow work crew and management. A diligent and conscientious team that rejuvenated our recently purchased residential property. Overgrown weeds, neglected bushes, and an abundance of poison ivy was transformed into a tranquil environment. Professional, cooperative, and thorough.
