Sod vs Seed at a Glance
Sod gives you a finished lawn at once and needs less water and daily care early on, while seed costs less on very large, flat ground when there is no deadline.
Neither one is right for every yard. The better start depends on how soon you need the lawn, how the ground lies and how much of it there is.
Here is how the two compare, side by side.
| Question | Sod | Seed |
|---|---|---|
| A lawn you can see | The day it goes down | Once the seedlings fill in |
| Rooting in | First roots in 10 to 14 days, established in 4 to 6 weeks | Sown in its season: early fall for fescue, late spring for Bermuda |
| Water and daily care | Less | More, until it comes up |
| Cost on large, flat ground | More | Less, when there is no deadline |
| Slopes and erosion | Covers the ground at once | Bare soil can wash before it takes |

When Sod Is the Better Choice
Sod wins when you need results fast, when the yard slopes, where erosion is a worry, or when there is a deadline to meet.
Choose sod if one of these fits your yard:
- You want a lawn you can see the day the work is done.
- The yard slopes, and seed would wash down the hill before it rooted.
- Bare ground is eroding and needs covering now.
- There is a date to meet: a sale, a move-in or a family event.
Most sod puts down its first roots in 10 to 14 days and is fully established in 4 to 6 weeks.

When Seed Is the Better Choice
Seed wins on very large, flat areas with no deadline, sown in early fall for fescue or from late spring for Bermuda.
Seed is the better start when:
- The area is very large and flat, where seed costs less than sod.
- There is no deadline, so the lawn can take its time to fill in.
- It is a "cool-season" grass such as fescue, sown in early fall while the soil is warm and weed competition is low.
- It is a "warm-season" grass such as Bermuda, sown from late spring to early summer.
Seeding practice for North Carolina home lawns is laid out by NC State Extension, Carolina Lawns.

Renovate or Replace the Old Lawn
If less than half of the old lawn is healthy grass, replace it rather than renovate it.
Walk the yard and look at what is growing: healthy turf, weeds and bare ground. A lawn that is still mostly good grass can be brought back by renovating it, with "core aeration" and "overseeding" into the turf already there. Below half, there is not enough good grass left to build on, and new sod is the better start.

I could not be happier with Cut & Grow LLC. They are professional and their work is first rate. I recommend that you give them a try, I think you will be glad you did.
Enjoyed my experience with the the Cut&Grow work crew and management. A diligent and conscientious team that rejuvenated our recently purchased residential property. Overgrown weeds, neglected bushes, and an abundance of poison ivy was transformed into a tranquil environment. Professional, cooperative, and thorough.
