Lawn Weed Control in Greensboro

Lawn weed control stops weed seeds before they sprout and treats the weeds that do come up anyway.

It is two jobs on one calendar. The first is prevention: a seasonal program starts with a pre-emergent that keeps crabgrass seed from ever germinating. The second is treatment: the broadleaf weeds that get through, dandelions and clover most of all, are sprayed where they grow.

We run both on home lawns and commercial grounds across Greensboro, NC, so the lawn is covered before the weeds show and after.

Every program we run is built from these two halves.

Before weeds appear
A "pre-emergent", the crabgrass preventer, goes down in late winter and stops seeds from sprouting at all.
After weeds appear
A "post-emergent", the weed spray, is spot-applied to dandelions, clover and other weeds already growing.

Pre-Emergent, Broadleaf Spraying and Grub Control

A program puts pre-emergent down in late winter, sprays broadleaf weeds such as dandelions and clover, and adds grub control in early summer.

The treatments in a weed control program are these.

  • Pre-emergent in late winter. The crabgrass preventer goes down before the soil warms, so the seed already in the lawn never comes up.
  • Post-emergent spot spraying. "Broadleaf weed control" targets dandelions, clover and the other wide-leaved weeds that make it through, sprayed where they grow instead of across the whole yard.
  • Grub control in early summer. "Grub control" stops the damage grubs do to the roots below the surface, before it shows up as dead patches.

A full program can run about eight visits a year, one every four to six weeks. For a Bermuda lawn, the month-by-month weed control timing is laid out in the NC State Extension Bermudagrass Lawn Maintenance Calendar.

When Treated Weeds Die Off

Treated weeds usually curl and die within 10 to 14 days.

The spray works from inside the plant, so the weeds do not vanish the day we visit. Leaves twist and yellow first, then the plant dies back over the next week or two.

Rain After a Weed Spray

A heavy downpour right after a spray can reduce how well it works, so we time every application around the forecast.

When a hard rain is coming, we hold the spray for a dry window rather than put product down that the storm will carry off. It is the one thing that undoes a good application, and the easiest to plan around.

Product Choices and Integrated Weed Management

Weed control products can range from conventional to organic and eco-friendly options, and we offer both, so you choose on the call.

We lean on "integrated weed management": a thick, well-fed lawn leaves weeds little room, so less product goes down to keep the turf weed-free. Spot spraying instead of blanket spraying is part of the same thinking.

Weed Control Estimates Around Greensboro

We quote weed control per treatment or as a yearly program, for homes and commercial lawns in Greensboro and the nearby towns.

A full program is usually quoted as an annual contract billed in level monthly amounts, so the cost is the same every month of the year. What sets the number is your lot size, the condition of the turf, slope, shade and access. We quote the whole job before we start, with no surprise charges after.

We cover Greensboro and towns such as Summerfield, Jamestown, Oak Ridge and McLeansville.

From your call to a cleaner lawn

A weed control job goes from the first call to a lawn on a program in four steps.

  1. Call us

Tell us the address and what is coming up in the lawn. We answer the phone or call back the same working day.

  2. We look at the lawn

We note which weeds are there, the grass type and the thin spots, then quote per treatment or as a yearly program.

  3. We treat on a dry day

Pre-emergent, spot spraying or grub control, whichever the season calls for, timed around the forecast.

  4. We keep coming back

On a program we return about every four to six weeks, show up when we say we will and clean up before we leave.

Enjoyed my experience with the the Cut&Grow work crew and management. A diligent and conscientious team that rejuvenated our recently purchased residential property. Overgrown weeds, neglected bushes, and an abundance of poison ivy was transformed into a tranquil environment. Professional, cooperative, and thorough.

What Happens to an Untreated Lawn

Weeds and grubs left untreated thin a lawn and slow its recovery.

Every weed takes the space, water and light a grass plant would have used, and grubs work on the roots out of sight. The longer both go, the thinner the turf gets and the longer it takes to fill back in, even after treatment starts.

When each treatment goes down matters as much as the treatment.

Weed control questions

Short answers to what homeowners ask us most. Anything else, ask on the call.

What is the most effective weed control?

Both halves together: a pre-emergent in late winter to stop crabgrass seed from sprouting, and a post-emergent spot spray for the broadleaf weeds that still come up. Keeping the turf thick does the rest, since a dense lawn leaves weeds little room.

What is best to kill weeds permanently?

A spray kills the weeds that are growing, and they usually curl and die within 10 to 14 days. What keeps new ones from taking their place is the pre-emergent each late winter and a lawn thick enough to crowd them out.

How to permanently get rid of weeds?

Treat the lawn on a program rather than once. A full program can run about eight visits a year, one every four to six weeks, starting with the pre-emergent and adding grub control in early summer, so weeds and grubs never get a season to thin the turf.
